History of mobile phones

Mobile is the most important communication tool today in the world of technology.  Many changes in human life since the existence of this small tool.  

But do you know about how the beginning of the cellphone.  This article will discuss the development and history of mobile phones.

Cell phones have come a long way since 1973 (estimated), both in design and in features.  From Motorola DynaTAC, to hundreds of current brands.

Motorola DynaTAC


There are many new cellphone models and brands that have been circulating since 1973 until now.

Beginning of Cellphones

The first cell phone was invented in 1973 by Motorola.  On April 3, 1973, Motorola engineer Martin Cooper made the first cell phone call with the DynaTAC 8000X.

The prototype weighed about 1 kg and was quite large, at that time the cell phone could only be used to talk for 30 minutes and took 10 hours to recharge.

Cell phone technology in 1985 featured the first text messages sent in history.  This feature was developed by Vodafone.

The big companies that existed at that time also followed in the footsteps of Vodafone like Motorola and Nokia, who entered the market in 1987 with the Mobira Cityman 900. Weighing 760 grams, this phone represented a significant improvement.  A year later, the Samsung manufacturer released its first mobile phone in 1988 with the SH-100.

The rapid development began in the 1990s, the phone casing became smaller and the antenna was thinner.  In 1992, major innovation came with the Nokia 1011, the first mass-produced GSM (2G) cell phone.

But in its development and began to evolve in 1990 its users increased to 11 million, and until now the number is around 2.5 billion.

While the world's first smartphone was launched in 1994, the IBM Simon was the first device with a touch screen application.  This innovation continues because there are more and more users.  Currently, the design has become more compact and varied, such as folding phones, slider phones and others.  Motorola innovated with its StarTAC product which was the first clamshell phone and the first to introduce a vibration system.

The first mobile phone with a QWERTY keyboard was the Nokia Communicator 9000, released in 1996. In addition to having a keyboard, the Communicator 9000 also introduced many business-related features such as e-mail, web browsing, faxing, word processing andspreadsheets

And, in 1998, Siemens launched the Siemens S10, the first mobile phone with a color screen and 3G connection.

Nokia itself released the Nokia 3310 and being one of the most iconic phones of all time, this phone remains one of the best selling phones today.

In 2002, innovation came with the Sanyo SCP-5300, a phone that allows you to view photos on a , without having to connect it to a computer.  This innovative phone also features two color screens and a camera with flash.

Cell phones continued to get smaller and more functional, with Nokia and Motorola dominating the market worldwide.

Cameras also improved when Nokia introduced the 7610, its first smartphone with a 1MP camera.  additionally introducing the first global roaming mobile phone, the Nokia 6630.

Smartphone History

  • SMARTPHONE continues and develops.  In 2007, Apple launched its first product, the iPhone, known as the iPhone 2G, a design revolution that replaced all physical buttons with a touch screen.  The large screen of the iPhone made it possible for the first time to surf the Internet on a relatively small device.  Likewise, it is the first phone in history to include dedicated apps for YouTube and Google Maps. 
  • This tremendous success sparked Google, developing an early version of Android, to compete with Apple.  Android 1.0 debuted on the HTC G1 in 2008, and Google made sure it included a large touchscreen, a full-featured web browser, and the Android Market app store.
  • In 2010, Samsung launched its new flagship: the Samsung Galaxy S.
  • Many other devices with pioneering features hit the market in 2010. Nexus S, the first NFC-enabled Android smartphone.
  • Moto Defy, the first waterproof Android smartphone launched, and Samsung launched Note 8MP and Galaxy II.
  • Motorola launched the Razr, beating Samsung for thinnest phone at just 7.1mm thick , and Apple unveiled the iPhone 4S with Siri, the first digital voice personal assistant on a smartphone.
  • Sony Ericsson forayed into the mobile gaming market and created the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, a console-like phone focused on the gaming experience.

Phone makers like Huawei and Google have also started bundling big camera sensors with cutting-edge software.
